SCHOOL OF MUSIC, CUHK-SHENZHEN POSTGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2024
The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) was founded in accordance with the Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Chinese-foreign Cooperation in Running Schools upon approval by the Ministry of Education. With the mission to explore a new path for higher education that bridges China and the world, CUHK-Shenzhen inherits the educational philosophy, management model, and academic system of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. It is characterized by the collegiate system, internationalization, general education, and bilingual teaching in both Chinese and English. It seeks to cultivate innovative talents with a global perspective, Chinese cultural traditions, and social responsibilities in mind.
The School of Music of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (also known as Shenzhen Conservatory of Music (provisional)) is one of the ‘Ten Major Cultural Facilities in the New Era’ planned and built by the Shenzhen Municipal Government. To equip students with academic excellence and performance competency, the School adopts an innovative training approach adhering to the tradition of the collegiate system and prioritizing students’ individuality. The School brings in world-famous faculty members of international standards to nurture students’ artistry on the highest level. In April 2021, CUHK-Shenzhen announced the appointment of Prof. Xiaogang YE, an internationally acclaimed composer and chairman of the China Musicians Association, as the Founding Dean of the School of Music. Now, the School’s faculty member includes Prof. Xiaogang YE, Prof. Wing-Wah CHAN, Prof. Ping JIN, Prof. Liping ZHANG, Prof. Fang YUAN, Prof. Vera TSU Weiling, Prof. Krzysztof JABLONSKI, Prof. Yong-yan HU, Prof. Yijie SHI, Prof. Boyu ZHANG, Prof. Ning LIANG, Prof. Ni FU, Prof. Le YU, Prof. Huiling ZHU, Prof. Songhu LIU, Prof. Shenyang, Prof. Daye LIN, and more. Student who fulfill all degree and graduation requirements (GAP requirement, etc.) will receive a Master of Arts degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Ⅰ. Application Instructions
Applicants for the 2024 MA Programme in Music Performance and the 2024 MA Programme in Music Composition and Theory are required to apply online via https://pgapply.cuhk.edu.cn/.

Ⅱ. Application Requirements
1. Academic degree:
• Earned a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university, preferably with honours of Second Class or higher
or
• Completed an honours programme at a recognized university and achieved a Bachelor’s degree with an average grade no less than “B”
or
• Completed a course in a tertiary educational institution and secured professional qualifications, or similar, equivalent to an honours degree.
2. Language Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following:
i. TOEFL: minimum score of 517 (Paper-based test) / 67 (Internet-based test)
ii. IELTS (Academic): minimum score of 6.0
iii. Earned a degree from a university in Hong Kong
iv. Completed a degree programme where English was the medium of instruction
All language test scores must be valid and issued by their respective organizations, and should be submitted before July 18, 2024.
III. Application Procedure
1. Application Materials
Applicants need to submit the following materials through this link: https://pgapply.cuhk.edu.cn/
- Application Form: Automatically generated and obtainable from the online application system. After signing, upload the scanned copy to the same system.
- Official Transcript(s): Must include the grading system and be stamped by the Registrar's Office or Archives.
- Degree Certificates: A copy of the Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree Certificate, Graduation Certificate, or Student Status Certificate, stamped by the Registrar's Office or respective school.
- Language Score Sheet: A copy of the TOEFL or IELTS score.
- Recommendation Letters: Two are required. Referees will receive links via email to upload their signed letters.
- CV and Personal Statement: Complete in both English and Chinese.
- Identification: An Identity card for Chinese applicants or other official documents for international applicants.
- Music Competition Awards Proof: If available.
- Repertoire Form: Complete in both English and Chinese if applying for the MA Programme in Music Performance. Please refer to Annex II "School of Music, CUHK-Shenzhen 2024 Master of Arts Entry Requirement" for repertoire requirements).
- Original Compositions: If applying for the MA Programme in Music Composition and Theory, applicants must submit two original compositions, using either Chinese or foreign instruments. Each composition must have a duration of more than five minutes. Applicants should ensure that at least one of these compositions is either an orchestral or chamber music piece. The scores for these two compositions should be uploaded as PDFs under the “Supplementary Information” section, “Other Supporting Files” category.
- Additional Documents: Applicants might be asked to provide further supporting materials.
Note: All of the above material must be uploaded in original copies. For information regarding the majors, refer to Annex I, “School of Music, CUHK-Shenzhen 2024 Master of Arts Major Information.” Ensure your chosen major aligns with the Repertoire Form for the audition.
Applicants must verify the authenticity and validity of their application materials. Submission of false or misleading information will lead to the application being declined, with the applicant responsible for any legal consequences.

3. Application Deadline: Ensure all application materials are submitted by the deadline. Shortlisted applicants will be notified through the email provided during application. Notification of eligibility for auditions will be sent from mus_admission@cuhk.edu.cn. Applicants are recommended to check their email regularly.

4. Application Fee: A non-refundable application fee of CNY 300 will be charged.
IV. Admission Criteria and Process
The 2024 intake for the MA in Music at the School of Music involves a two-phase selection: first, assessing qualifications, and second, an examination encompassing a performance audition and an interview. Once the online application is completed and submitted, the qualification review will begin. If the online application isn’t fully completed, the applicant will not be considered for the qualification assessment. After this assessment, eligible candidates will undergo the examination phase and will be informed via email about their audition.
1. Performance Audition: The audition is a comprehensive evaluation of the candidate’s musicianship and artistry. For in-depth audition details, refer to Annex Ⅱ.
2. Interview: After the audition, candidates will have a face-to-face interview conducted in both Chinese and English.

Master of Arts Programme in Music Performance
Course Duration: 2 years
Enrollment Status: Full-time
Tuition: CNY 120,000 per academic year
Housing Charges: CNY 1,200 per academic year
Credits to Graduate: 36 units (compulsory: 27-30 units; electives: 6-9 units)
Master of Arts Programme in Music Composition and Theory
Course Duration: 2 years
Enrollment Status: Full-time
Tuition: CNY 120,000 per academic year

Credits to Graduate: 36 units (compulsory: 27 units; electives: 9 units)
Upon fulfilling all the requirements, graduates will earn a Master of Arts degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
