Prof. Claus Peter Flor (Germany)
Conductor
General Music Director
Born in Leipzig in 1953, Mr. Flor began his musical career with violin and clarinet tuition in Weimar and Leipzig, before focusing on conducting with Rolf Reuter, Kurt Masur and later on with both Rafael Kubelik and Kurt Sanderling.
At the age of 31 he became Music Director of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and in 1986 received the title “General Music Director” – he also began regular associations at this time with the other major German orchestras: the Leipzig Gewandhaus and Dresden Staatskapelle. In 1988 he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic, where he has since returned twice.
Prior to his position as Music Director of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra from 2008 to 2014, Mr. Flor held the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi (2003 – 2008) at the personal invitation of their Music Director Riccardo Chailly, with a remit to develop the orchestra’s work in the central European repertoire. From 1999 to 2008 he was also Principal Guest Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he has served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra London (1991 – 1994) and as an Artistic Advisor, as well as Principal Conductor to the Zuerich Tonhalle Orchestra (1991 – 1996).
At the moment maestro Claus Peter Flor is in contract as the Music Director of the Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra “La Verdi” in Milano.
Claus Peter Flor is respected worldwide as a hugely gifted conductor with remarkably instinctive musicianship. Mr. Flor continues to work internationally at a high level; some highlights include his return to the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra among others.
Over the years he was many times reinvited to have performances with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, China National Symphony, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Frankfurter Museumsorchester, and the Residentie Orkest. Claus Peter Flor also returned many times (incl. a tour to Japan) to the Vienna Symphony for concerts in Vienna and at the Bregenz Festival. His symphonic “travels around the world” include as well the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira in Rio de Janeiro, the orchestra OSESP in Sao Paulo, and his performance with the NHK; the orchestra in Osaka, and Sapporo Symphony Orchestra in Japan.
