Prof. Ning LIANG
Professor
Ning LIANG is currently a Professor at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. As one of the brightest mezzo-sopranos, Ning LIANG has already been heard in many of the world's leading opera houses. After earning a master's degree at the Juilliard School, Ms. LIANG went on to become the first Chinese singer to perform principal roles at such international houses as the Metropolitan Opera (Octavian), La Scala (Idamante) and Vienna State Opera (the Composer: Ariadne auf Naxos). Ms. LIANG is also the first Chinese singer to appear at the Hamburg State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Deutsche Staatsoper, Bologna's Teatro Comunale, Opera Marseilles, Royal Opera La Monnaie, Brussels, Israeli Opera, and many others. Having made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Octavian. Ms. LIANG also returned to the Met and co-created the role of the Shaman in the premiere of Tan Dun's opera The First Emperor. She created the role of Lu in three different productions of Tan Dun's opera Tea for Suntory Hall, the Netherlands Opera, and the Stockholm Symphony production by Chang Ching.
Her repertoire also includes Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito, Angelina in La Cenerentola, Rosina in Barbiere di Silviglia, Juno and Ino in Semele, Arsace in Semiramide, Malcolm Groem in La Donna del Lago, Isabella in L'Italiana in Algeri, Charlotte in Werther, Giovanna in Anna Bolena, Adalgisa in Norma, Margarita in La damnation de Faust, Maddalena in Rigoletto, Azucena in Il Trovatore, Preziosila in La Forza del Destino, Nicklausse in Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Magdalene in Die Meistersinger, Ottavia in L'Incoronazione di Poppea, Sesto in Giulio Cesare, Orfeo in Orfeo ed Euridice, Maffio Orsini in Lucrezia Borgia, Fricka in Das Rheingold, Mescalina in Le Grand Magabre, and the title roles in Serse and Tancredi.
Ms. LIANG is also an active concert and recital singer and has worked with Giuseppe Sinopoli, Gary Bertini, Riccardo Muti, Sir Colin Davis, Christian Thielemann, Eliahu Inbal, Peter Schreier, Gerd Albrecht, and James Colon, Gustav Dudamel etc. She has also sung in many important European festivals such as Wiener Festwochen, Bregenz Music Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Savonlinna Music Festival, and festivals in Dresden, Ludwigsburg, Bad Kissingen, Athens, and Rheingau.
Ms. LIANG is a winner of the Metropolitan National Council Competition, the Mirjam Helin Competition, the Musician's Emergency Competition, the Rosa Ponselle International Vocal Competition, the Loren L. Zachery Competition, and the Luciano Pavarotti Competition.
Ms. LIANG appeared as Suzuki in Mitterand's 1995 film Madame Butterfly, a role she has also performed at La Scala, the Netherlands Opera, in October 2008 at the Los Angeles Opera, and in this coming season at Washington National Opera.
A frequent performer of Mahler, Ms. LIANG has recorded the composer's Second and Eighth Symphonies as well as Das Lied von der Erde.
