Mr. Sai KAI
Lecturer
Sai KAI is currently a faculty at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He has been the Principal Oboe at Orchestra de Macao and a guest lecturer of the music department at the Macao Polytechnic College since 2014. He was previously appointed as the Principal Oboist at Sonderjylland Symphony Orchestra in Denmark (2005-2013), which was the first tenure principal oboe position ever given to a Chinese national from a European professional orchestra, and the Principal Oboe in NCPA Orchestra in Beijing (2011-2014).
Mr. KAI started learning music from a very young age. He successively attended the China Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, Indiana University in Bloomington, USA, and the Royal College of Music in London. From 2001 to 2003, he studied and worked as an orchestra apprentice at Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra Academy in Munich, and has also been invited to take part in festival orchestras such as Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and Verbier Music Festival as principal oboe and English horn player.
Mr. KAI has won multiple scholarships, awards, and competitions, some of which include the Irving & Lena Lo Award, Indiana University School of Music Merit Award, Queen Elisabeth, the Queen's Mother Music Scholarship, Royal College of Music Senior Oboe Prize, the First China National Chamber Music Competition for Wind and Brass, Isle Of Wight International Oboe Competition in England, Crusell International Oboe Competition in Finland, Jeunesses Musicale in Belgrade and Isle of Man International Oboe Competition.
As a concert soloist, KAI has performed concerts with various orchestras, including the South Danish Symphony Orchestra, Fredericia Symphony, Thüringen Philharmonie, Bournemouth Sinfonietta, Aukso Chamber Orchestra, Cappella Ispolotina, Wiener Frauen Orchester, Lituan Chamber Orchestra, etc. His various concerto and chamber performances have been broadcast by CCTV, Bavarian Radio, Danish Radio, and KBS.
As an orchestral musician, KAI has frequently been invited as a guest artist with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Munich State Opera, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Malmo Symphony, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, Aalborg Symphony, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra and other prestigious orchestras. He has also been invited and highly commended by maestro Myung Whun Chung as Principal Oboe in the Asia Philharmonic Orchestra several times between 2006 and 2011, as well as by maestro Lü Jia in the Global Chinese Festival Orchestra for consecutive years of events.
