Biography

XU Xiaoyu is currently a Collaborative Piano faculty at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. She graduated from the Composition and Conducting Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2022 and became the first Master of Arts in Opera Coaching at the conservatory.

She studied under renowned vocal coach Professor Wei Fugen, conductor Professor Wang Yan, and Vienna State Opera Vocal Coach Alessandro Amoretti. Additionally, she received guidance in vocal performance from Professor Li Mingyue and opera artist Chi Liming.

As an opera coach, she has rehearsed for the original ethnic opera A Letter to My Wife, a project supported by the China National Arts Fund, at the Fujian Opera and Dance Theater; the operas Così fan tutteLe nozze di Figaro, and The Cloth Peddler produced by Tianjin Opera and Dance Drama Theater; and the opera Tosca jointly produced by the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Shanghai Opera House, and Shanxi Grand Theater. She served as the piano accompaniment of the Youth Chorus of the China National Symphony Orchestra, piano accompaniment of the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra-Chorus, and vocal coach of the Tianjin Opera and Dance Drama Theater. She was invited to serve as the vocal coach for the China division of the 2019 Bologna International Vocal Competition and the collaborative piano coach for the 2022 Poly (Tianjin) Orchestral Art Festival.

As a choral conductor, she established the Youth Chorus of the Silk Road International Art Center and led the chorus, along with the vocal department of the Tianjin Conservatory of Music, in successfully hosting a choral concert at the Silk Road Center Concert Hall.

In terms of academic research, her paper received the third prize in the Vocal Music category at the "Wanye Cup" Paper Collection and Evaluation event held during the 2022 National Music Education. Her article titled An Exploration of the Characteristic of Opera Director in Rehearsal Practice was published in the journal "Art of Singing". She was invited to participate in the International Forum on Musical Performance Studies (IFMPS 2023) and deliver a keynote speech.

She won multiple awards in international vocal and piano competitions, such as the 2017 Hong Kong International Vocal Competition and the 2015 Hong Kong International Piano Competition. She also coached her students to win gold awards in national piano and vocal competitions, and she received several awards for Outstanding Coaching Teacher.

She also performed as a solo pianist, singer, and choral conductor at various prestigious venues, including the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai Opera House, Beijing Concert Hall, Tianjin Grand Theater, and Silk Road International Art Center. Her performances left a lasting impression at these prestigious venues.
