Biography

Dr. Yi LIU currently serves as Lecturer and Collaborative Piano at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. As an active soloist and chamber musician, Dr. Yi LIU has performed at the National Opera Center in New York, Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Griffin Concert Hall in Colorado, Trianon Theatre in San Jose, CA, Murchison Performing Arts Center, Voertman Hall, Eberly Hall, and Trinity Presbyterian Churches in Texas, Seully Hall in Boston, Shanghai Symphony Hall, Hangzhou Grand Theatre, etc. Dr. Yi LIU performed in the Mozart 250th Memorial Concert Series at Shanghai Symphony Hall, and the Beethoven 250th Celebration Series Concerts at Murchison Performing Arts Center in Texas. Sponsored by the Verdehr Trio Foundation for two consecutive years, he performed in a series of concerts featuring all contemporary composers' compositions written by Alexander Arutunian, Dinos Constantinides, Gian Cario Menotti, Joan Tower, Kevin Puts, Libby Larsen, and Paul Chihara for the Clarinet, Violin, and Piano Trio. As a collaborative pianist, he was engaged in the rehearsals and performances of opera Don Giovanni. Chamber musicians he worked with include Caleb Hudson, Keith Packman, Kimberly Cole Luevano, Katie Lansdale, Lila Brown, Qi Wang, Rhonda Rider, etc.

Dr. Yi LIU won the 1st Prize at the 2019 International Keyboard Odyssiad Piano Competition (Solo Division), the 1st Prize at the 2023 Charleston International Music Competition for his Violin and Piano Duo (Contemporary Music Division), and the 1st Prize at the 2021 Isabel Scionti Piano Competition. He was the winner of the 2020 Concerto Competition at the University of North Texas and the prize recipient at multiple chamber music competitions, including the 2022 Gershwin International Music Competition and the 2018 ENKOR International Music Competition. His solo and chamber music recordings were posted on the classical music Facebook channel "Le Salon de la Musique" and the Chamber Studies website of the University of North Texas College of Music, etc. Pianist and musicologist Robert D. Levin gave high praise for his performance.

Devoted to the future of piano pedagogy, Dr. Yi LIU has presented lecture-recitals in the US and has been giving masterclasses at summer piano festivals in China. As a teaching fellow of the piano department at the University of North Texas College of Music, he gave piano lessons and taught piano classes regularly. He taught piano classes and worked as the Staff Pianist at the Texas Woman's University. He worked as the Staff Pianist at the UNT International Summer Music Institute. He explored the Schenkerian Analysis under the tutelage of music theorist Timothy L. Jackson. His Doctoral Dissertation "A Schenkerian Analysis and Interpretation of Joseph Jongen's Eclectic 'Vingt- quatre petits préludes dans tous les tons pour piano,' Op. 116" illuminates the distinctive stylistic and aesthetic approaches Joseph Jongen uses in his piano works.

Dr. Yi LIU studied with Adam Wodnicki, Ya-Fei Chuang, Cheung-Yu Mo, Yi-Qiang Sun, Qiao-Yun Yang, Kang-Wei Hou, etc. He attended the Salzburg Mozarteum International Summer Music Festival with a scholarship in 2016. He obtained his Master's Degree from Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and his Graduate Performance Degree from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. He received his Doctorate of Music in Piano Performance at the University of North Texas College of Music under the tutelage of Adam Wodnicki. He also worked as a Teaching Fellow and performed as the pianist of the Center Piano Trio under the tutelage of Pamela Mia Paul at the University of North Texas.
