- Who We Are
The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was established in 2014 in accordance with the Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Chinese-foreign Cooperation in Running Schools upon approval of the Ministry of Education. It inherits the educational philosophy and academic systems of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and is committed to nurturing high-end talents with global perspective, Chinese tradition and social responsibility. It would enroll students from all over the world and offer 4-year undergraduate programmes plus postgraduate studies at both master and doctorate levels. Currently with over 10000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, CUHK-Shenzhen offers programmes in science and engineering, management and economics, humanities and social science, data science, medicine, and music (from 2021 onwards). Most of the courses in CUHK-Shenzhen are taught in English.
The School of Music is located in the International University Park in Longgang District, Shenzhen, adjacent to the current campus of CUHK-Shenzhen. The total site area is about 73,800 square meters, the total construction area is about 129,700 square meters, and the total investment is about 1.59 billion yuan. The School has completed the planning of the campus with the design concept of keeping pace with the times and pursuing excellence. The campus is under construction with facilities including the opera house, concert hall and music technology center, etc.
Currently, the School of Music offers undergraduate programs in music performance, musicology, music composition and theory, and postgraduate program in music performance, music composition and theory. In the future, the School of Music plans to offer undergraduate programs in dance performance, Chinese instruments performance and postgraduate programs in art management, dance performance, Chinese instruments
performance and more. Classes are taught in both Chinese and English, and other languages such as Italian and German. The School of Music will take on the global environment, the tradition of the college system, the holistic education and the student-oriented education philosophy of the University and broaden the global perspective of students through a modern university management system and internationally recognized academic standards and teaching models.
- Where is Shenzhen
Bordering Hong Kong in the south by a river, Shenzhen was established as a Special Economic Zone in 1980. After years of hard work and with the influx of talents, Shenzhen is now well-known as a global technology hub and is dubbed by the media as the China Silicon Valley. In 2019, Shenzhen was ranked 14th in the Global Financial Centres Index and boasts the third busiest container port in the world. With the actual administrative population close to 20 million spreading over 9 Districts, its GDP surpassed Hong Kong in 2018 mounting to 2.42 trillion RMB.
- Job Description
The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen is looking for candidates to take up academic leadership in various disciplines for its newly-established School of Music. They will lead an international teaching team to provide the highest level of teaching and professional practices in the designated disciplines. They are expected to work under the Dean to establish the School as one of the top music institutes internationally meanwhile creating a strong impact in the southern part of China in particular the Greater Bay Area.

- set up the area and develop the teaching materials following the approved syllabus from undergraduate to postgraduate levels;
- lead and coordinate all full-time and part-time teachers from undergraduate to postgraduate levels;
- network regional and international community for the promotion of the area and the preparation for professional development of graduates;
- plan and supervise activities such as seminars, symposiums, conferences, field works and outreach programmes regionally and internationally.
- Qualification Requirements
- Should be a leading and representing figure in either Chinese winds, strings or percussion instruments well-known and recognized in the professional field
- Should have strong passion and academic accomplishment in building the Chinese Instruments Division;
- Should have regular exposure internationally as an outstanding performer having collaborations with Chinese orchestras of the highest standard;
- Should be knowledgeable and skillful in cross cultural endeavour, i.e. be able to play professionally one Chinese and one other instrument and have strong and unique artistic style;
- Should have rich experience in teaching and giving regular masterclasses and workshops to students in music conservatories in different regions;
- Should be able to give instructions in Chinese and English fluently;
- Should have received national and international awards in performing Chinese instrument(s);
- Should have rich experience to conduct a professional Chinese orchestra or to lead the related section of a professional Chinese orchestra;
- Should have international affiliation of related professional societies;
- Should have a music degree plus an additional qualification in music.
- The academic leader will be appointed as Professor and working directly under the Dean’s leadership.
- Salary & Benefits
Salary will be highly competitive and commensurate with experience and accomplishments. Appointments will be made under the establishment of CUHK-Shenzhen, and employee benefits will be provided according to the relevant labor laws of Mainland China as well as CUHK-Shenzhen regulations. Subsidies from various government sponsored talent programmes will also be made available for eligible candidates.
